Speakers:

Maggie Puhacz, Partner, Canadian Tax

Maggie primarily focuses on providing tax compliance and planning services to private and public companies in a variety of industries including real estate. She specializes in personal and corporate tax planning for owner-managed businesses, as well as mergers and acquisition transactions. Maggie has experience working on projects including marital breakdown, estate and succession planning involving alter ego trusts, spousal trusts, and family trusts as well as private foundations, real estate transactions, donation planning, and business reorganizations. At Smythe, Maggie leads the activities and strategy of the People and Culture team.

She obtained her CA designation in 2009. Before joining Smythe in 2007, she worked in retail management.

In her spare time, Maggie enjoys yoga and hiking.

Subash Chand, Partner, Accounting & Assurance

Before joining Smythe’s Langley office in January 2019, Subash worked as a senior manager with another mid-sized firm in the Fraser Valley for over ten years. At Smythe, Subash is primarily focused on providing accounting, assurance and tax advisory services to private companies in various industries. He specializes in the agriculture, manufacturing, professional services and real estate sectors. Subash is also actively involved in recruitment and mentorship at Smythe.

Subash has resided in the Fraser Valley for the majority of his life. He is a graduate of the University of the Fraser Valley and obtained a Bachelor of Business Administration and majored in accounting. Subash obtained his Chartered Accountant designation in 2012.

Outside of work, Subash enjoys spending time with family, travelling and is an avid sports fan.

Javier Tam-Huang, Senior Manager, Advisory Services

Javier joined Smythe’s Advisory practice in February 2020 to focus on providing business valuation solutions to businesses ranging from small owner-managed to large public corporations. He specializes in the insurance brokerage industry. He has experience providing business valuations in the context of mergers and acquisitions, tax reorganizations, management buyouts, succession planninglitigation support, fairness opinions, financial modeling, and other matters.

Prior to pursuing a professional career in business valuations, Javier earned his Bachelor of Business Administration degree at the British Columbia Institute of Technology. He earned the BCIT Finance Medallion, awarded to the person who obtained the highest average in the program. In 2020, Javier wrote and passed the Membership Qualification Examination for the Chartered Business Valuation designation. Before Smythe, Javier was with another national accountancy firm offering business valuation services.

In his spare time, Javier enjoys golfing, skiing and spending time with friends and family.

Arthur Klein, Mergers & Acquisitions Advisor

Arthur joined Smythe in 2019 as a Senior M&A Advisor. His mandate is to assist Smythe clients in Western Canada in preparing for and executing business divestitures or acquisitions. As a trusted intermediary, he is committed to assisting buyers and sellers of $3M+ revenue enterprises across the multifaceted process to value and transact the sale of these businesses. In January 2023, Arthur presented at the BBB Webinar: This Way Out: Business Exit Planning & Divestment Roadmap.

Arthur’s education includes a Certified Mergers & Acquisitions Professional designation from Kennesaw State University, a Diploma in Marketing and Sales Management from UBC Sauder School of Business, a Certificate in Business Administration from Ryerson University, and a BSc. (Agr.) from the University of Guelph. Beyond his education, Arthur is an experienced business professional with over twenty years of experience in corporate marketing, operations management, and business development held with industry-leading organizations.

Outside of work, Arthur leads an active lifestyle. He enjoys hiking, mountain biking, skiing, kayaking, swimming, travelling, and taking treks with his dog.
